An Acrobat of Genres: The Art & Attitude of Nicholas Chistiakov [Review]

ARTograma - June 21, 2017

Nicholas Chistiakov is a Belarusian-American Artist whose oeuvre includes portraits, abstraction, animal paintings, still lifes, nudes, and more. Atypically, he does many different kinds of work and he does them all well. He studied painting at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts in Minsk; then emigrated to New York with his family in 2004. His first mature work was a series of paintings depicting museum scenes; a conceptual/pictorial means of incorporating art history and the museum-as-idea—a metaphor of human existence where life, death, and creativity are on display, engaging in a complex dialogue.
